Productivity is an issue of a particular importance to the Gaza Strip projects as it isconsidered a newly developed area and because of the huge amount of projects planned to becarried out in the near future.
The purpose of this research is to study “measurement of laborproductivity in the construction industry in the Gaza Strip”.
The main objectives of this studyare to gain understanding of the factors affecting labor productivity in buildings constructionand measuring labor productivity of block work operation in the Gaza Strip.
The objectives of this research have been achieved through a study of seventy – sixquestionnaires and a case study in the Gaza Strip.
The results of analysis of 45 factorsconsidered in the questionnaire concluded that the main factors negatively affecting laborproductivity in buildings construction are: material shortages, lack of labor experiences, lackof labor surveillance, misunderstanding between labor and superintendents, drawings andspecifications alteration during execution, payment delay, labor disloyalty, inspection delay,working for 7 days of the week without holiday, and tool / equipment shortages.
The resultsof site observations of block work operation in the case study demonstrated that averageproductivity of skilled laborer in laying blocks 20 is 38.40 blocks per hour (3.07 m2/h) whileaverage productivity of skilled laborer in laying blocks 10 is 40.50 blocks per hour(3.24m2/h).
The findings also indicate that productive time of skilled labor is 77.01% ofworking time, contributory time of skilled labor is 9.76 % of working time, and unproductivetime of skilled labor is 13.23% of working time.
The results of this study recommended that contracting companies have to conduct laborproductivity study in their projects to improve labor productivity.
It is important for eachcontracting company to adopt motivational or personnel management measures to boostworkers’ morale.
Contracting companies are requested to use project scheduling techniquessuch as computer-aided construction project management in their projects
