The degree of observance of health education standards included in the content of the science curriculum for the first grade in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
Abstract
The main objective of the current research is to reveal the degree of observance of the health education standards included in the content of the science curriculum for the first grade in middle school in KSA for the first and second semesters of the academic year 1436- 1437. In order to achieve the objective of the research, the descriptive approach was adopted. The researcher constructed a list of health education standards that must be considered in the content of the science curriculum, then building the research tools: list of standards of health education in the middle school and card content analysis. After analysing the data statistically, the research results revealed the following:
1. The number of standards considered in the content of the science curriculum was (13) out of the (64) prepared standards.
2. Some areas were completely not included such as: mental health, sexual health, disease and prevention, dealing with medicines, bad habits, safety and first aid.
3. The content of the science curriculum does not adequately meet the standards of health education and therefore does not give a positive indication to achieve the goals of the health education for students.
In light of these results, the study concluded with a number of recommendations, most notably the need to review the content of the science curriculum for middle school students by incorporating more health standards that focus on the functional aspects rather than scientific information.
